Stillness

Rebecca Rosario

As I was walking with my daughter at this park close to our home, this view just captivated me.

I startled her as I gasped when we turned the corner and it came into my site. She asked if I was ok, then quickly realized it was me “being me” and falling head over heels in love with what I was seeing.  I snapped a few pictures from various spots on the boardwalk and they sat in my phone’s camera roll for weeks.

I knew the pictures meant something to me, but I didn’t know what. Does that ever happen to you? When something really gets me, I start to wonder “why?”. For me,  it’s like a cosmic riddle, like forces outside of myself trying to tell a story in a language I don’t know. Ok, maybe it’s just me.

We go to this lake all of the time. I actually have taken several family portraits, senior photos and birth announcements here. The air is just sweet and the lighting and backdrops lend themselves to good photography.

What mesmerizes me most about this scene is the reflection of the water. It is the exact inverse mirror of its surroundings and the sky could not have been more beautiful if an artist had dreamed it up. The craziest thing to me is that people were still playing pickleball, basketball and just playing on the playground!! How?!?!

To achieve this magnitude of beauty, the only thing that needed to happen was….wait for it, nothing. That blows my mind!  Stillness created this. Stillness took my breath away. Stillness put on a show that apparently was just for me in that moment.

In a literal 5 minutes, the wind blew and the scene was gone. The reflection, lost.

Western and Eastern cultures and faiths all have practices of stillness.

Waiting

Meditating

Praying

Being

For something outside of themselves to bring peace, wisdom and knowledge.

Science has data to show that stillness has biological and physiological benefits to our bodies.

The unfortunate part is that we live in a society that rewards “busy” and sells us an idea that beauty is something to achieve and peace is something to buy.

But just look at the beauty, calm and awe stillness can bring.

Love,

Rebecca
